Basic Texas Hold Em Poker Rules
First of all when entering a poker room you need to always be aware of the betting limits for each game. The limits may widely vary in Texas Hold Em Poker, depending on the room you are in or the game you are playing. Here are the basics rules for Texas Hold Em Poker.
In Texas Hold Em Poker each player receives two cards dealt face down, which are referred to as the hole cards. Then five cards are dealt face up on the table. Then each player plays his or her best five cards using any combination of the hole cards and the five face up cards on the table. The best five card poker hand on the table wins as long as he or she has not folded their hand.
The bets start after the two hole cards are dealt. The next three cards are then dealt face up on the center of the table and they are called “the flop”. These cards are used by everyone at the table. Then it’s time for the next round of betting. The next card is then dealt face up on the table which is referred to at the “turn card”. This card is added to the flop and can also be used by everyone at the table as long as they are still in the game. After the turn card there is a third round of betting.
After the third round of betting the final card is dealt face up which is referred to as “the river”. So now you have all five cards face up on the table. The player is to make his 5 card hand using his 2 hole cards and any of the 5 cards face up on the table. The final round of betting is now made at this time. After the final bet is made comes the "showdown", which determines the winner of the pot.
Now here comes a brief explanation of betting and in doing this there are a few terms you could know. The first one is small blind which is a forced bet by the person left of the dealer before any cards are dealt. The small blind is half of the minimum bet. Then comes the big blind which is made by the second person left of the dealer. The idea behind the small blind and big blind is to get an attractive pot and force people to play. The blind requirements are usually shown on the screen.
After the blinds have been made the hole cards are dealt. After each player has seen his cards the person left of the player that made the big blind starts the betting. He can either call the big blinds bet, raise, or fold which means to drop out of the game. Then after everyone has made the bet comes the flop. The player left of the dealer starts off the betting. This time there is no blinds. The betting continues around the table. After each round the bets are made until the fourth and final bet in which the winner will be determined.
After the fourth bet is what is referred to as the “big showdown”. This occurs if there is more than one person left in the game. The players at the table will reveal their hole cards and the person with the highest 5 card hand wins the pot. If the highest hand is shared then the pot is split. If one player is left at anytime during the game he gets the pot.
